I was fortunate enough to photograph the incredibly talented singer-songwriter @jniquenicole before she left Japan. I first met J’Nique back in 2018 at the @bwijgroup conference, and even then, it was clear she was someone special.Years later, I was listening to a game soundtrack when I heard a voice that sounded strangely familiar. To my surprise, it was J’Nique performing “Weight of the World” from #nierautomata by @squareenix. I had no idea she had written and performed one of the game’s most beloved songs, with a fanbase that spans the globe. But J’Nique’s artistry goes far beyond NieR: Automata. If you haven’t already, take some time to listen to her album, This Is Only The Beginning Album. It’s a beautiful reflection of her talent as both a songwriter and performer.I’d wanted to collaborate with her for years, but never quite reached out. Then I saw her post announcing that she was moving back to the US, and I realized it was now or never. I’m so grateful I finally sent that message. One of the biggest concerns clients have before a portrait session is simple: "Will the hair and makeup actually suit me?"Over the years, our hair and makeup team has worked with professionals, entrepreneurs, creatives, executives, and individuals from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. Some clients prefer a natural Japanese-inspired look. Others feel more confident with a polished Western style. Many want something in between. Our role isn't to fit you into one beauty standard. To my surprise, what I thought would be one of the easiest questions to answer often turns out to be one of the most difficult. Many people can tell me what they do, what they’re responsible for, or what goals they’re working toward, but identifying what genuinely brings them joy is much harder.The more I ask this question, the more I realize how important it is. But what often surprises people is the transformation that happens.It can begin before the session, unfold during the experience, or reveal itself when they finally see their portraits. I've watched clients walk away feeling more confident, and more connected to themselves than they have in years. Sometimes they've spent so much time taking care of everyone else, building careers, raising families, or pursuing goals that they've forgotten to see themselves fully.
