Working with such incredible clients has been more than just a creative experience; it's been a journey of growth and learning. Each session has left me with invaluable insights, reminding me of the power of connection, confidence, and collaboration. Here are some of the key lessons I've learned from my clients:
1. The Power of Freedom
Seeing my clients embrace a sense of freedom in front of the camera has been truly inspiring. It's a reminder that when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, our true selves can shine.
2. The Strength of Collaboration
Every photoshoot is a partnership. The best results come when the model and photography team collaborate closely, creating a shared vision that elevates the entire experience.
3. Confidence is a Superpower
Confidence isn't just a trait—it's the key to unlocking our full potential. My clients have shown me that when we believe in ourselves, we can conquer any challenge and radiate an unstoppable energy.
Working with entrepreneurs breaking barriers and leaders inspiring change has been incredibly inspiring. The strong, determined women I've had the privilege to work with continue to teach and motivate me every day. Thank you for being part of this journey and sharing these valuable lessons with me!

One of my favorite things about Shichi-Go-San is witnessing the joy and excitement of children from diverse cultural backgrounds celebrate this day.
For those who may not know, Shichi-Go-San is a traditional Japanese celebration that takes place each year. The name translates to "Seven-Five-Three," referring to the ages of the children being celebrated: three-year-old boys and girls, five-year-old boys, and seven-year-old girls.
This ceremony marks a significant milestone in a child's life, celebrating their growth and wishing for their continued health and happiness. On this day, children typically dress in traditional Japanese clothing, such as kimonos, and visit a shrine with their families to offer prayers and receive blessings.
It's truly fascinating to see Japanese families pass down their kimonos to the next generation for this special occasion at their local shrine.
But what’s equally special is seeing international families embrace the ceremony with their own children, bringing a sense of adventure and newness to this beautiful tradition. Each family, regardless of their background, celebrates this milestone in their own unique way, and the images we capture are precious memories for everyone involved.
We love celebrating these moments through our photo sessions. For international families, we can assist with kimono rentals and communicate with local shops to ensure your 7-5-3 session is seamless and unforgettable for you and your children.

The fall foliage forecast is out, which means the holiday season is just around the corner! With the cooler weather on the way, it’s the perfect time to plan an outdoor photo session. The autumn colors are gorgeous, and they make the best backdrop for photos that you'll want to share with everyone. Plus, it's a great time to start thinking about your holiday and nengajo cards. If you get your photos taken in late October or November, you’ll have them ready in plenty of time to order and send them out before the holiday rush hits.
Capturing those little moments of joy and connection within families is truly something special. For couples, it’s a wonderful way to celebrate and showcase your love. If you’re looking to update your family photos, mark a special occasion like 7-5-3, omiyamairi or simply want some beautiful shots of you and your partner, let’s make it happen.
I’m now taking bookings for outdoor sessions, but spots are filling up fast! If you’re interested, shoot us an email at info@toptia.com.

You know, when I first got serious about photography, I naturally gravitated toward photo walks in Japan. It was such a blast joining these groups, surrounded by photographers at all different skill levels. Seeing how each person approached photography was eye-opening, and it really showed me how much this art form can bring to your life.
I hadn't done a photo walk in years, but recently I joined one in Brooklyn during Elena S Blair’s retreat. It was my first time doing a photo walk in the US, and wow, the vibe was so different! I loved every minute of it, and the connections I made with the other photographers were priceless.
It felt like everything came full circle—starting with photo walks in Japan and then having this experience back in my home country. Now I’m itching to do more photo walks around the world. If you’ve ever been curious about photography, why not grab a friend, get out there with your camera, and just have fun? You never know where it might take you!

Can you believe we're already nine months into 2024? Time has flown by—one moment I was capturing the beauty of cherry blossom portraits, the next I was in Charlotte, and now, autumn is just around the corner.
Autumn is one of our most booked seasons for family portraits. The cooler weather and vibrant leaves create the ideal setting to capture your family's love and connection.
You can choose our studio or an outdoor location for your session. Could the pure happiness on this boy’s face be from the love of his family, the crisp autumn air, or perhaps something more? Book your 7-5-3 session and we can help you with kimono rentals!

There’s always something to smile about, even when life feels heavy. As you go through your day, your week, and the months ahead, focus on those moments that made you laugh, brought you joy, and lifted your spirits.
It could be the sound of your children’s laughter, dancing, or the peace found in a simple stretch. It’s in these moments that you find the fuel to press forward. So, keep moving, keep laughing, and embrace everything that makes life truly worthwhile.

Life is full of unexpected moments, and sometimes meeting someone can lead to an unforgettable experience. While strolling through the bustling streets of New York City, I had an encounter that left a lasting impression.
As I stepped out of a photo shop, I noticed an elegantly dressed older gentleman with a 4 x 5 instant Polaroid press camera in hand. His name is Louis Mendes, a renowned photographer who has made a name for himself by capturing spontaneous portraits of people he meets in Times Square and New Orleans. @reallouismendes has an extraordinary portfolio, having photographed legends like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Lena Horne, Gordon Parks, Denzel Washington, Spike Lee, Swizz Beatz, Alicia Keys, and Colin Kaepernick. His life story is a testament to the power of following one's passion.
I couldn't resist the idea of taking a portrait of him. We struck up a conversation, and I asked if he would wait while I found a flat-brimmed hat to complete the look I envisioned. Thankfully, he agreed.
I made my way to Union Square and then Soho, searching the shops for the perfect hat. It took nearly an hour, but I finally found it. I returned to 34th and 6th, and there Louis was, true to his word. We spent the next hour talking about his journey from being an in-house photographer at a department store to becoming a celebrated artist capturing iconic moments with famous figures.
Louis Mendes is more than a photographer; he's a storyteller. His work transcends simple portraits, capturing the essence of people and preserving fleeting moments as timeless art. Our conversation reminded me that photography is not just about capturing images but about connecting with people and sharing their stories.
This meeting with Louis Mendes is a memory I'll cherish forever. I’m grateful for the amazing people I’ve met through photography and look forward to meeting more.

Taking ownership of your life, your voice, and your body is one of the most empowering things a woman can do. With Black Breastfeeding Week (August 25th to 31st) and Breastfeeding Awareness Month concluding, I want to uplift and encourage all women—especially Black women.
This week and month may be ending, but the importance of breastfeeding extends far beyond these days of recognition. Breastfeeding is more than just a practice; it’s a lifestyle, a key part of motherhood, and a profound way to bond with your child. I want to remind you that it’s okay to take the time to breastfeed your baby without shame, be it at work or in a social space. The connection and nourishment you provide through breastfeeding are invaluable—both emotionally and physically. Breast milk is packed with nutrients that boost your baby’s development and protect them from illness. For mothers, the benefits range from improved health and financial savings to the joy and satisfaction that comes from nurturing your child.
The painful history of Black women’s experiences with breastfeeding, rooted in the exploitation and dehumanization of slavery, cannot be forgotten. This trauma led many Black mothers to rely on formula instead of breast milk. But today, we reclaim this beautiful act of nourishment.
Remember, your body is yours, your motherhood is yours, and your journey is yours. Nurture yourself and your child, even when it’s inconvenient for others. Don’t let the world steal this beautiful, natural, and powerful experience from you.

Japan is full of surprising experiences. How do you know a restaurant is popular? By seeing a long line of people willing to wait for hours. But have you heard about invite-only restaurants?
In the luxury hospitality industry, you'll quickly learn that not all experiences or restaurants are open to the public. Some aren't advertised on websites and some don't even show menus. A few months ago, I had the pleasure of being invited to such a restaurant.
This photo was taken at a secluded restaurant in Kyoto, only open to customers invited by another customer. Not only was the cuisine excellent, but the views were also serene.
I'd love to hear your thoughts. What do you think about invite-only restaurants or experiences? With everyone on social media, do you think some parts of your life should be shared exclusively with close friends or family? Should social media etiquette be invite-only?
Let me know your thoughts!

Over 8 years ago, I decided to bet on myself and my craft by opening my photography studio. Working in Japan, I've had the fortune of experiencing many highs with a diverse and supportive clientele. Yet, something was missing. I needed a community of photographers.
As a non-Japanese woman photographer, it can feel isolating. Integrating into the photographer space in Tokyo has been a struggle. I've always wanted to be part of a community where I could talk shop and have fun photo days.
At my wit's end, I looked outside Japan and found AMAZING photographers. These women became deep friends and members of my Elena S Blair Mastermind Accountability Pod. We spent six months together, navigating each weekly module, and despite being spread across East Coast, West Coast, Central Time, and Tokyo time zones, we made our weekly huddles work. Meeting in person in Brooklyn for the first time was incredible. I'm so proud of each woman in my Pod and feel ecstatic to be part of this fabulous group.
For those seeking community within their industry but struggling to find it in their city, prefecture, or country, remember that the world is big. Be open, be expansive, and always stick to your vision and purpose, as they will guide you. Sometimes, what you need isn't confined to one space.

I love capturing the essence of people, one headshot at a time.
This client traveled a long way to get her modeling headshot and Kintsugi Reclamation portrait done. Many people have misconceptions about headshots, thinking they are only useful for updating LinkedIn profiles. However, headshots are essential for personal branding, as well as modeling and acting portfolios.
I've photographed many models, actors, and creatives who are pursuing their careers in Japan. They seek to build a solid portfolio that showcases their personality, talent and skills, helping them stand out in the entertainment industry.
Our photoshoots can be done in the studio or on location. Your portfolio will include not only headshots but also half-length and full-length images.

When it comes to photoshoots, many clients wonder: How should I pose? Should I stand or sit? What's the best angle to capture my best side?
The true beauty of a session lies in those unexpected moments—a genuine smile, a heartfelt laugh, an unforgettable shared glance. These surprises are what make each shoot truly unique. While I plan each session meticulously with my clients, it's those spontaneous moments, especially with couples, that often create the most magical images.
Perhaps it's their deep connection and care for each other that lead to the most captivating candid shots.
And where’s the best place to capture these surprises? Gardens, of course! This lovely couple from Florida experienced a delightful surprise at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. It was amazing to work with them and witness the beautiful, unique moments their chemistry produced.

Happy Marine Day, everyone! Also known as Sea Day, this holiday in Japan is a time to show gratitude to the seas and oceans. Nature offers us an abundance of resources and we often forget to appreciate our beautiful planet.
Though I’m currently in the US, I want to share my journey and express my gratitude. Finding my true self has been a challenging yet rewarding path. I used to internalize harsh narratives from classmates, colleagues, family members and even strangers. I spent much of my time in the US trying to be what others wanted me to be, which made me miserable.
If it weren't for my determination to create a space where I can grow and thrive, I wouldn't be here to appreciate the ocean or sea. Seeing myself free from societal expectations has been incredibly liberating and expansive.
I wish this inner love and freedom for all my clients. Many people I meet say they hate being photographed or don't feel ready for it. I always wonder what that "place" is that they're waiting for. Did someone else define it for them? My greatest joy is helping others find their own place and love it as much as I love the place I’ve found for myself. For those who already have this inner love, may it grow even deeper.
We often forget to show gratitude to our bodies, getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. Take time today to appreciate your body and Mother Nature by pampering yourself, reflecting, or taking a trip to the sea.
